Which charity should I choose for in memory donations?

Charitable donations are becoming more popular at funerals as a substitute for flowers however it's not always easy to know which charity to choose. Donations in memory are a great way to raise money for good causes.

This blog looks at how to choose a charity.

Should I choose a charity that the person that has died selected?

If the person that has died has planned their own funeral, it's very likely that they will have made a decision about a charity already. It is therefore safest to opt for what they have requested.

Should I choose a charity the person that has died was passionate about?

Where a charity hasn't been chosen in advance for a funeral, it can sometimes be helpful to think about any charities that the person who has died was passionate about. Was there a charity they regularly donated to and supported? Or perhaps there were causes they strongly believed in supporting, such as children, animals or medical research?

Should I choose a charity that related to a relevant illness?

Consider a charity that may be related to a specific illness or health condition that the person that has died may have suffered from. Perhaps they had Alzheimer's or cancer, could you opt for a charity that would benefit others who are suffering?

Should I consider a smaller local charity?

As a funeral director covering Llandudno, Conwy and Colwyn Bay we find that sometimes, smaller local charities can be overlooked but they tend to offer localised help and support to the community. Perhaps your Funeral Director can make some suggestions if you are struggling to come up with any ideas.

How can I donate to a charity for a funeral?

Tom Owen and Son Funeral Director have partnered with Much Loved to offer all of our families a personalised online tribute page. The huge benefits of this is that more than one charity can be selected, donations can be made online which is great if you cannot attend the service in person, you can make use of gift aid so the charity receives more money from your donation and the family can see at a glance who has donated.

You can see all of our current and past online funeral tributes here.

We will also accept cash and cheques on the day of the funeral or posted to us before or after the funeral. You will find us at 11 Bodhyfryd Road, Llandudno should you wish to post out a donation, which we will then add to the total donations.
