Inspiring Inclusion in funerals

As a funeral director and business owner, establishing myself in a traditionally male-dominated industry has been both challenging and empowering. On International Women's Day, on Friday 8 March 2024, the theme of inspiring inclusion resonates deeply with my experiences, prompting reflection on the progress we've made and the challenges ahead.

In a field where women aren't always present, it becomes crucial to ask the question: "If not, why not?" Gender should never be a barrier to pursuing one's passion or excelling in a profession. The funeral industry is no exception, and breaking through these gender norms is not just a personal achievement but a step towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace.

It's imperative to call out poor practice. The fight for equality doesn't end with securing a position; it continues by advocating for fair treatment and equal opportunities.

Tristan says: “At Tom Owen and Son, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of two remarkable women on our team who have passed relevant exams in their areas of work and are excelling in their roles. Kelly and Vicky’s dedication and success is great to see and a clear example of how women can thrive in any professional arena.”

Our commitment to inclusion goes beyond our team; we actively provide work experience opportunities to women looking to begin a career within the funeral sector. I am acutely aware of the privilege I hold within this business, having entered through marriage into the family business. This awareness fuels our dedication to providing opportunities to other women, acknowledging the importance of breaking down barriers for those who may not have had such pathways readily available.

Moreover, our celebration of women is not confined to a specific day each year but is a daily practice embedded in our company culture. Recognising the contributions of women is not just a once-a-year affair but an ongoing commitment that is reflected in our business.

I have been a member of Soroptimist International in Llandudno since February 2021. This organisation, dedicated to supporting and empowering women, aligns perfectly with our commitment to real, tangible support. We don't just say we support women; we actively engage in initiatives that uplift and empower them.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us actively promote inclusion, provide opportunities, and support aspiring women. Let us contribute to a world where gender is not a limitation but a source of strength and diversity.
